A Thought I Carried Home Today

Love is often quiet when nobody is watching.

On my way home, I saw an elderly couple sharing an umbrella.

It was not raining heavily. They could easily have walked separately, but they stayed close beneath that small circle of shelter.

The man kept moving the umbrella toward her. Each time he did, his own shoulder became a little wetter.

Neither of them appeared to notice.

I wondered how many forms love takes after nobody is watching.

Perhaps love is not always the grand promise or the perfectly chosen sentence.

Sometimes it is simply noticing that the person beside you is getting wet and moving the umbrella slightly in their direction.

I carried that thought home today.
